Student Council

30th Dec 2024

Here at St. Colmcille’s Girls’ National School our students and their wellbeing is at the centre of everything that we do! It is very important to us that our pupils play an active, positive role in the life of the school and we believe that our Student Council helps to achieve this.

Our School’s Student Council is comprised of two representatives from each senior class. Sixth Class elect four extra students to represent the four class levels in our Junior School.

The pupils elected are required to be actively involved in the Student Council. They must attend meetings regularly and participate in activities. They need to be role models for other pupils.  As well as bringing matters to the council for discussion, the representative is required to report the outcome of meetings to their own class and occasionally to other younger classes.

The following girls were elected this year and did a fantastic job representing their classmates on the Student Council:

Jeanisha, Sarica, Erin, Amelia, Eibhlin, Ishanvi, Maisie, Kripa, Aoife, Maahi, Molly, Anna May, Isabel, Ellie, Mia, Ernestine, Mira, Sofia, Teighan, Cáit.

Some of the amazing things that our Student Council did this year….

- In November they acted as stewards at our school open day in November. They guided the parents of the new Junior Infants around the school and ensured that the new Junior Infants and their parents got a true insight into the exciting lessons that happen in our school each day.

- In December they had an ‘Upcycling Sale’ for Science Week. They encouraged the pupils in the school to create toys using recycled materials and then they sold the items in the school hall and made €380 to go towards new science equipment!!!

- They surveyed their classmates regularly and attended meetings with Ms Ahern to ensure that the ideas and voices of their classmates were heard by the principal and the teachers.

- In February they met with a representative from a food company, and sampled a variety of hot lunches. They shared their thoughts of the food with the principal and helped her to decide which company would be suitable to provide healthy hot lunches to our pupils.

- In March they designed certificates for Seachtain na Gaeilge.

- In April they organised a whole-school Well-being Week. They ran a colouring/drawing competition, held daily raffles and organised fun whole-school wellbeing events for the school to participate in each day. They addressed their classmates on the intercom each day, talking about the importance of personal wellbeing.

- In May and June they played a part in introducing a new ‘Alternative Play Plan’ for our yard. When surveying classmates they learned that many students wanted more options of things to do on the yard. After speaking to teachers, a new plan was brought in to ensure that there is a variety of activities available for students to do during break time.

We could not be prouder of our Student Council and all of the work that they have done for our school community this year!!
