St. Colmcille's Girls' National School - A Brief History

Our school has a proud and rich history, evolving from its humble beginnings to a modern, inclusive educational institution. The school was established in 1966 following the amalgamation of the Infant Girls' School and the Senior Girls' School. Initially, the school served girls from Junior Infants to Sixth Class and shared a building with the newly formed Boys' School, though each had its own separate staff and Principal.

The first Principal of the newly amalgamated girls' school was Mrs. Agnes Kavanagh, followed by Miss Kathleen O'Connor. In 1979, Mrs. Anne McDonagh took over leadership, serving until 2005. Under her guidance, the school moved to a new building in 1986 to accommodate a growing population in Swords.

After Mrs. McDonagh's move to Archbishop's House in 2005, Mrs. Bernadette Murtagh took over as Principal, leading the school until her retirement in 2013. Ms. Karen Burke Logue serves as the current Principal, continuing to guide the school's growth and development.

As the community continued to grow, so too did the school's commitment to meeting the diverse needs of its students. In 2022 the school opened an Autism class to support students with specific learning needs. Initially housed in a temporary prefab building, this class moved to a purpose-built, state-of-the-art modular facility in September 2024. The new building includes a dedicated sensory room and sensory yard, ensuring a supportive and enriching environment for students with autism.

Throughout its history, St. Colmcille's Girls' National School has remained dedicated to providing inspiring education, fostering strong friendships, and creating a welcoming community for all its students. We are proud to call it our school!
